Dendrites: Artist: Jin Han Curator: Yusi Xiong

3 June - 3 July 2023
Nan Ke Gallery is pleased to announce Han Jin's solo exhibition project Dendrites will be presented on June 3, 2023. The exhibition brings together a series of his recent paintings, sketches, and installations to highlight his enduring exploration of perspectives and ways of seeing expressed through painting, and intertwining themes of microcosm and macrocosm, mirroring, symbolic depictions of the homology of the human body with nature, and painting's relations with conventional education.

Jin's dynamic yet precisely planned paintings transfix viewers by employing a plethora of vivid hues, bravura brushwork. From his early depiction of individual and natural elements to his recent observation of the microcosm of the human body, and to provocative juxtaposition and layering of elements that relate to geographic and natural science. Jin presents a richer and more exploratory body of works by depicting the homology of the human body with geographic and cosmic references.

Jin seems able to capture the infinite moments of human and natural homogeneity on a limited canvas. The painted forms and colours are often based on the play of his observation and imagination, not simply reproduced, creating a romantic abbreviation of the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm. In the series The Context where he juxtaposes geographic and human elements, the artist replaces the scientific observation apparatus and transcends perspectives of scientific common sense. For Jin, his works also extend an exploration of the role of painting in society and its relations with conventional education - although art does not enter education as a goal in itself, it should be able to intervene and mix with it, just as how art blends into our lives, and it can be a romantic entry point to evoke curiosities.

In a series of works recently created in 2023, Jin made bold attempts to recombine and superimpose elements of the natural landscape, meteorology, geographical symbols, codes, human anatomy and tissues under the microscope: the human body itself, the moon visible to the naked eye, and the broken ice surface superimposed on the details of enlarged blood vessels in Gene; the abstract map with latitude and longitude markings of his own and the dendritic spreading veins in Codominance; All of them draw on Jin's fascination with the sense of looking. These larger canvases are almost like mirror images, it's a world reflecting back at the viewer, and at the same time, you also feel like you are seeing into many other worlds.

For this exhibition, the artist has recreated a part of his studio environment for us, the DNA Room, with a large-scale painting in situ, a cabinet of curiosity, books, sketches, and installations. It is also not only a space for his artistic creations but also his safe house, library, and place for research, communication, and contemplation. This space is a survey exhibition within the show, providing the viewer clues and yet another perspective to understand his creative process and his works.
