Pei-yi Tsai (b. 1994, Taipei, Taiwan) now lives and works in London, UK. Tsai’s creative practice is rooted in personal identity, lived experience, and the realities faced by Asian queer communities within diasporic contexts. Tsai’s practice can be understood as a convergence of trauma archaeology, a laboratory of forms, and a manifesto of survival. Through meticulous sanding of canvases and layered applications of paint—processes that echo the sedimentation, erosion, and concealment of memory—their works register the passage of time and the persistence of what remains. Objects and surfaces are treated as mnemonic sites, where personal and collective histories are embedded, obscured, and reactivated. The artist’s recent works have expanded beyond the human figure to encompass found items, material traces, and fragmented histories as carriers of memory and endurance.
 
Tsai’s recent solo exhibitions include: “THE OTHER. STARTING FROM ME.”, BROWNIE Project, Shanghai, China (2025). Recent group exhibitions include: West Bund Art & Design Art Fair, Shanghai, China (2025); “My galaxy”, Paulina Caspari Gallery, Munich, Germany (2025);  Minor Attractions Art Fair, The Mandrake Hotel, London, UK (2024) “Somatechnics”, NoHo Showroom, London, UK (2024); “Headshot”, Stapleford Granary, Cambridge, UK (2024), among others.
 
The artist received an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, UK in 2024, and an MFA in Fine Arts from the Western Painting Department of the National Taiwan Normal University. Tsai is a recipient of the Next Art Tainan Award (2022), a finalist for the Taiwan Emerging Art Award (2021) and the Art Future Prize (2021), alongside other awards.
